ECP at Cardiology Associates in Green Bay Wisconsin
External counterpulsation (ECP) is a procedure performed on individuals with ischemic cardiomyopathy in order to diminish the symptoms of their ischemia. In various studies, ECP has been shown to relieve angina, improve exercise tolerance³, and decrease the degree of ischemia in a cardiac stress test.

HOW WILL I FEEL DURING AND AFTER I FINISH
THE THERAPY?
Most patients describe the treatment as a vigorous massage.
They also say that after you get used to it, reading or
sleeping during the treatment is very easy. Right after finishing
a treatment many are energized or invigorated, but some
feel a little tired
IT’S AS SIMPLE AS 1,2,3...One: ECP pumps, sending oxygenated blood
to the heart during diastole (the heart is resting)
Two: ECP stops pumping just before the
heart pumps, leaving the blood vessels open and void of
resistance.
Three: Over the treatment period your angina is reduced,
or may even be eliminated

CARDIASSIST - Treatment Protocol - Indications/Precautions
Angina: The established treatment regimen is 35 one-hour sessions. Usually, treatment is provided five days per week
over a 7 week period. Patients lie on an exam table or a physical therapy bed. Many centers provide headphones and
a CD player or TV-VCR equipment for entertainment. Some patients choose to sleep during the procedure.
Heart Failure: The established treatment regimen is 35 one-hour sessions. Usually, treatment is provided five days per
week over a 7 week period. Patients are treated with the Graduated™ Pressure treatment regimen which gradually
increases the amount of Diastolic to Systolic augmentation based on the patient’s ejection fraction. This minimizes the
chance of worsening the heart failure condition by being treated over aggressively with ECP.
Indications: CardiAssist ECP is indicated for angina, myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock and congestive heart
failure.
Precautions: The physician should exercise his/her medical judgement when applying ECP to patients with severe
peripheral vascular disease, deep vein thrombosis, aortic regurgitation, left ventricular hypertrophy, aneurysms,
pacemakers, uncontrolled arrhythmias, significant aortic valve disease, significant pulmonary disease and unsuitable
lower extremity anatomy (e.g. amputation or congenital deformity). There is no data to suppor t the use of ECP during
pregnancy.
ECP should be used only by qualified medical or paramedical personnel under the direction and supervision of a
physician. Use of the device is not recommended in the presence of flammable gases such as oxygen. from Cardiomedics

Thanks
My name is Richard Makos 72 years old
First heart attack was in 1973. My second heart attack was in 1976. I had bypass surg (4) in 1987. And another bypass surg in 1995 (5). My third heart attack came the day after Christmas Dec 26 2009. With grateful care from Dr. Pathakjee & Dr.Verma, they suggested to me, for congestive heart failure, the program ECP. Until that time I was taking nitro at least 3 times per day.
Now after 22 treatments I have used nitro only 3 times total. My thanks to Jill, Cory and the rest of the good folks there in the lab. They make you feel like family at Bellin of Green Bay. The treatment is working.
I would like to thank both of you for giving me the chance of getting the ECP treatments. It has been very good for me. I do feel like a different person. It is so wonderful not to be popping a nitro always and my breathing is better. Once in awhile I have to take a pill, but nothing like before. My breathing is much better as long as I watch myself. I feel like a different person when I walk out of the clinic.
Everyone in the clinic are such great people. I couldn't ask for anything better. Keep up the good work. Jill, Wendy, and Cory do a great job. They make a person feel so good.
I feel I was blessed for these treatments. The treatments were given to me at

James Z.

I had heart bypass surgery in 1983. For about 15 to 20 years everything was OK with medication. But, for the last six or seven years, I had pain in my chest, less energy, and shortness of breath. The use of nitroglycerine became more frequent. Going for a walk, throwing the ball for the dog, going up stairs, and even eating usually required the use of nitro. ECP was suggested treatment and I started to notice improvement about week four. With the final treatment in week seven, I can do all the above things with more energy, no pain, and no nitro. Steve loved getting ECP because his legs felt so good and he could breathe so much better. Read more about it at the link below: http://www.strokesurvivorblog.com/2010/01/19/ecp-treatments-completed/

Great job, Jill. You are one of the big reasons the ECP program has been successful. You should be proud!

I have now completed three weeks of treatment. I am using significantly less nitro. The incidence of angina is less frequent and it is also less intense. I hope the improvement continues. I enjoy listening to audio novels during the treatments.
